Why do we help small birds?
Because doing so helps 'stop the bleeding'.  You see, the people who bring birds in for help, many times children, are quite upset that their little friend is hurting.  We have a different approach here.  We don't take the little bird from the child, we allow the child to help us make the bird better.  And, having an open-door policy, we invite the child and his family to return to watch their rescued bird grow and heal.  We lift worry off some very small shoulders knowing both the little rescuers, and the bird, will sleep better tonight.

The small, backyard and migratory birds also have a great effect on *Public Health (asthma & allergies)*Food Crops*Forests (lumber, furniture, hiking)*They eat Pestiferous Insects (many that cause disease)*Scientist love them as Bio-Indicators (watching them gives us a heads-up on many problems with air and water quality)*They have Financial Value in Retail, Hospitality, and Eco-Tourism industries, and *They have great Aesthetics value.
.
We are an all-inclusive songbird rehabilitation facility located in the north-central part of the state of Indiana.  We do accept songbirds from other states, and locally, provide transportation for raptors (owls, hawks), waterfowl and shore birds to other area rehabilitators.
.
What is rehabilitation for wild birds?  It is meeting the medical or physical needs of these downed, rescued birds so they may be returned to the wild.  From setting broken wings to feeding orphaned babies, we work with these birds until they are capable of flying, foraging for food and avoiding predators.  Then we complete what is termed a slow-release program, supervising and doing supplemental feedings, until the bird can handle freedom on its own.
.
We care for well over 100 birds per year.  These are the birds most homeowners care about spending hundreds of thousands of dollars each year trying to attract these beauties to their yards with feeders, housing and specialized landscapes.
.
We are supervised by the Federal Migratory Bird Permit office inside The Department of the Interior.  However, the government does not pay, reimburse or financially support rehabilitation efforts.  So we are one of the very few wild bird rehabilitation facilities operating within the entire country.
.
When you partner with us positive, immediate changes can be made.  We will be adding more before/after photos of the rescued birds to our website as it grows.  In 2007 our release rate, those that were able to fly free again after our help, was 82%.  That is a huge boost to the wild bird population.  Charitable contributions to us are tax deductible.  If you would like to help the wild birds please click the Pay-Pal icon, or you can mail your donation to us at Songbirds of Northern Indiana, Inc., 304 Water St., Plymouth, IN  46563
